Ammo Safety Rules

I hope someone can help with my question. I do not own a gun but I am definitely a supporter of 2nd amendment and NRA and gun ownership. My question concerns my neighbor who is a hunter. On 2 occassions this past summer I found undischarged shotgun shells in my yard while mowing the grass. I have also picked up a shell in the street in front of our house. I'm certain they belonged to my neighbor but I don't quite know the correct way to deal with this. If the unfired shells are not a big danger then I don't want to appear as some kind of anti-gun looney and cause poor relations with him but if on the other hand he is being irresponsible and endangering us and the children in the neighborhood then I should talk seriously with him. Can someone help put this in perspective for me?

They can be dangerous

What I would do is gather up the unfired ammo and take it to him. I wouldn't preach, just ask him if it was his. If he says yes, then give it to him and say no more. It could be something as simple as a hole in a hunting vest.

If he says no, take it to a gun store or range. They'd be glad to take it off your hands.

If it happens again, then say something. There is a possibility those shells can discharge if you run over them with your mower.

There was a story earlier this year about a kid who took a hammer & nail and discharged a cartridge. The results weren't good. Kids, especially, don't understand that they are explosives and when they aren't in a gun, they simply blow up.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Thanks for the quick reply. Sounds like a good plan.

Now see, that's one of the reasons there aren't as many comments here as you might expect:

When the first commenter has already said everything that needs to be said all the rest of us could do would be to tag on a "+1!" type response.

Although I can add that you might want to point out to your neighbor (whether the shells are his or not) that with the ever-rising price of ammo it's worth his while to gather these 'pennies from heaven' up himself.

Enjoy!
