Gun Owners, Apathy and Barack Obama

The NRA has already sounded the alert about Barack Obama. It would seem, though, that many gun owners think the NRA is just engaging in scare tactics. Obama is polling well in heavily pro-gun states.

This is the same Barack Obama who voted for Ted Kennedy's ammunition ban. The same Obama who voted for a ban on handguns. The same candidate who supported the DC gun ban.

The problem is that he's been on so many sides of gun issues that he's managed to convince many gun owners that he's not a threat to them.

If you think that's not possible, consider Wisconsin in 2002. Then-attorney general Jim Doyle was running for governor. For twelve years as attorney general he proposed bans on short-barreled handguns, bans on shotguns, and even helped a state senator draft a bill that would have banned all ammunition except that specifically designed for single-shot firearms (meaning that all ammunition would have been banned).

The NRA sounded the alarm, but all Doyle had to do was send a mailing directed at gun owners to union members. The mailing assured that Doyle supported the rights of hunters and sportsmen. That was it. That was all he needed to do. Despite the fact that Wisconsin has one of the highest percentages of NRA members of any state in the country, Doyle won.

If it can happen in Wisconsin, it can certainly happen in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, and just about every other pro-gun state.

This will likely be a bad year for Republicans. And, if Obama is elected, we can expect all sorts of new anti-gun legislation, from a new ban on Evil Black Rifles to a ban on private gun sales, and more. And we just might see enough gutless Republicans cave on these issues that the bills make it to Obama's desk.

Even more important is the Supreme Court. The next president will appoint as many as three new justices. The Heller case hung on a string, with Justice Kennedy being the swing vote. That means that four justices were willing to rewrite the Constitution to suit their political philosophies.

Barack Obama isn't just a threat to those who like AR's or AK's. He's a threat to anyone who values the right to keep and bear arms for any purpose.

What happened in 2002 with the governor's election here in Wisconsin can happen with the presidential election if gun owners don't unite.

God help us if we don't.
