Ammo Safety Rules

I hope someone can help with my question. I do not own a gun but I am definitely a supporter of 2nd amendment and NRA and gun ownership. My question concerns my neighbor who is a hunter. On 2 occassions this past summer I found undischarged shotgun shells in my yard while mowing the grass. I have also picked up a shell in the street in front of our house. I'm certain they belonged to my neighbor but I don't quite know the correct way to deal with this. If the unfired shells are not a big danger then I don't want to appear as some kind of anti-gun looney and cause poor relations with him but if on the other hand he is being irresponsible and endangering us and the children in the neighborhood then I should talk seriously with him. Can someone help put this in perspective for me?

Just in time for National Ammo Day!

Go buy copious quantities of your favorite ammo today, and Baby Vulcan will smile down upon you.

A big thanks to Unc for updating and fixing this blog. From what I gathered, it was a bit tedious and time consuming.

Buy Ammo on Aug 28!

Via Kim Du Toit comes David Codrea's call to action:

On August 28, activists in cities across America will hold a national day of protest to focus attention on the scourge of illegal gun trafficking.

As I said on KABA Newslink Comments:

I'm going to try and start a blog swarm at WarOnGuns to get gun owners to buy a box of ammo on Aug 28--be nice if gun stores would offer some sort of nominal discount or a door prize (no purchase necessary to enter, just to keep things legal) or some such on that day to encourage this--Tuesdays may typically be slow days anyway, so this would get people in their stores and probably work out to their profit.

It'd be nice unintended consequences for the Bradys if we could demonstrate a few percentage points of sales increases on that day because of this.

(emphasis mine)

So, buy a box and stick it to the Brady Bunch!

More Ammunition Woes

There's a new gun control method being floated. This one comes from OSHA. Go check out the details the NSSF provides for us, including OSHA contact information.

Here's the important part:

For example, ammunition and smokeless propellant manufacturers would have to shut down and evacuate a factory when a thunderstorm approached and customers would not be allowed within 50 feet of any ammunition (displayed or otherwise stored) without first being searched for matches or lighters.

Has this been a problem in the past? I can't seem to recall any Cabela's or Bass Pro Shop going up in smoke because of the lighter in my pocket. Similarly, I can't remember a single ammunition/flare/ordinance plant turning itself into a crater.

Jump on this bandwagon! I've said it before, the way the gun grabbers are gonna get us is ammunition control.

How much is a good reloading setup these days?

Hat tip to Mister Bane, who always has his ear to the ground.

Ammunition Recall

PRODUCT WARNING AND RECALL NOTICE: WINCHESTER® WILDCAT® 22 & WINCHESTER® XPERT® 22

Here's the Winchester press release

There's more information there, including lot numbers affected and shipping/refund information, but here's the reason:

Through extensive evaluation Winchester has determined the above lots of WILDCAT® 22 and XPERT® 22 ammunition may contain double powder charges. Double powder charge weight ammunition may cause firearm damage, rendering the firearm inoperable, and subject the shooter to a risk of personal injury and/or death when fired.

Thanks to Kim du Toit.

7.62X39 Prices

The cost of 7.62X39 ammo has risen quite a bit lately. Everyone (i.e., I) was confused as there's not really been a shortage publicized. And, let's face it, one in seven guns on the earth is an AK so I figured it wouldn't be a supply problem. Turns out, it's Hillary's fault:

American defence officials have secretly requested a "prodigious quantity" of ammunition from Russia to supply the Afghan army in case a Democrat president takes over in Washington and pulls out US troops.

The Daily Telegraph can disclose that Pentagon chiefs have asked arms suppliers for a quote on a vast amount of ordnance, including more than 78 million rounds of AK47 ammunition, 100,000 rocket-propelled grenades and 12,000 tank shells - equivalent to about 15 times the British Army's annual requirements.

The Bush administration is said to want the deal because of worries that the next president could be a Democrat, possibly Hillary Clinton, who may abandon Afghanistan.

...

Defence specialists said Russian arms chiefs at first "fell about laughing" because they thought the order was a joke when it arrived this month.

But with the Americans said to be pressing for a price and earliest delivery date, the request is being rapidly processed and exports could begin before the end of this year.

The "decade's worth" of ammunition will give the Afghan National Army a vast arsenal to deal with Taliban or drug warlords if Washington withdraws its troops.
